Richard is passionate about all genres of music and takes great delight in ‘infecting’ others with his enthusiasm.

This is apparent and comes across to the audience and players alike in his conducting performances, as these reviews and comments convey.

It was one of my greatest experiences to work with Richard. He is such a good musician. I was so comfortable and confident to play the Sibelius Violin Concerto with his orchestra and I was inspired so much by his music making.

Richard's tireless energy amongst young people maintains attention in a calm and fun atmosphere. He has the knack of engaging pupils without intimidating or isolating any single player. Part of Richard's success as conductor of the Youth Orchestra has been that he is able to listen to their opinions and comments, try the music that they like and perform the students' own compositions.

Richard's professional attitude towards management has helped me create a framework for students that is becoming increasingly effective in challenging young players in their attendance, attitude, private practice and presentation.

I have learnt lots and my technique is getting better. It is a fantastic experience and I love the way everyone works together to become the best youth orchestra around.

Although we rehearsed a lot, it was never really tiring because it was so well organised that we were always coming back to do something different.

Each rehearsal is a wonderful lesson in technique and interpretation; from the latest understanding of Baroque style to the exacting demands of the 20th century. Richard possesses the ability to transform a group of individual players into a cohesive ensemble with resounding musical results.

Richard has brought together a group of musicians with a wide range of age and musical ability and with great skill, patience and good humour, drawn from us performances of which we would not have believed ourselves capable. The orchestral workshops are occasions of great enjoyment and the days always culminate in a real sense of achievement.

Richard is an excellent coach, tutor and conductor. He has a clear focus and manages to draw out the best of your capabilities. He is a real inspiration.
